When designing the perfect wedding photography package one of the biggest questions I get is “How many hours of wedding photography do you really need?” It can be overwhelming to review package after package looking for the best coverage, the best value, and the best experience. I have some great tips and questions to consider when booking your wedding photography coverage.
As a Raleigh wedding photographer, I find it straightforward to offer wedding photography packages basked on coverage hours. My wedding photography coverage includes 6, 8, and 10 hour packages. Each package includes the same basic features which means couples only have to make one decision. That decision is “How much wedding photography coverage do you really need?”
While 6, 8, and 10 hour packages are the most popular coverage times for weddings I do extend the option to add on an additional hour should my couple really need an in-between amount of coverage. My offers are designed to best meet the needs of my couples and their unique weddings. I aim to work with my pricing guide and packages as a guideline to meet their needs for their wedding day.
Unless you are planning an elopement, my recommended minimum amount of wedding photography coverage for a traditional wedding is 6 hours. Most receptions are 4 to 5 hours plus an hour for cocktail hour. This leaves just 1 to 2 hours of coverage for getting ready, the ceremony, and portrait time.
As a Raleigh wedding photographer, I always like to have a game plan and strategy for capturing all the important moments of a wedding day. I approach photographing a wedding the same way I organize the final gallery. A wedding day is broken into categories based on the moments I capture and the general story of the day. The categories I like to include in a wedding photography gallery are:
Dances & Toasts
All of these moments can be captured during a wedding with wedding photography coverage of at least 6 hours. There are, however, difference scenarios and logistics that couples should consider when choosing their photography coverage duration.
Wedding photography coverage lasting 6 hours can meet the needs of many couples if they meet certain criteria. A 6 hour package is deal for:
The most popular duration of wedding photography coverage is typically 8 hours. Couples who choose an 8 hour wedding photography duration receive more comprehensive coverage in each category. Couples also enjoy a more relaxed timeline overall and don’t experience the same pressure to pack in all their photos in a tight timeline before they lose daylight. An 8 hour package is perfect for:

For my wedding packages the best value is in the 10 hour wedding photography package. The more time you add on the day, the less time costs overall. Time is the most valuable currency on your wedding day and it is spent so quickly. Not having to worry intensely over timeline details because you have ample coverage can be super valuable to some couples. For couples with a lot going on or who simply want to ensure a relaxing pace for their big day – the 10 hour package is where it’s at. Some wedding days start incredibly early to accommodate the amount of people getting their hair and makeup done for the day and having a longer coverage time can ensure you don’t have to be ready quite as early! A 10 hour package is best for:
Ready to plan your wedding photography timeline? I always bet that certain photography moments on a wedding day are going to take longer than someone ordinarily thinks. When push comes to shove, you would be surprised at how long it can take to snap a few photos (especially with an unruly family – we all love them but it can be like herding cats!) In addition to the timeline suggestions I have also put together some other questions you may wish to consider when choosing your wedding photography coverage. These questions include:
These are some of the questions that should ultimately dictate hoe much wedding photography coverage you really need. It can be challenging to balance budget, style, and the offerings of your favorite wedding photographer. Hopefully this helps make choosing the best wedding photography coverage for your big day a little easier.
